Cathryn McCormack Belly Dance Teacher & Performer

About myself

I am passionate about belly dancing. I have been studying belly dance for 15 years, and teaching for 12. After performing for six months in Japan in 1995 I returned to Sydney and performed, taught, and formed a troupe under the name of Belle Belly Dance, the troupe performing as "The Belly Buttons". The country beckoned in 2003, and at the end of the year I moved to Armidale, NSW. Currently I am studying toward Masters of Education (Adult Ed) with a focus on belly dance, while continuing to teach belly dance and fitness classes.

Areas of Expertise

As a teacher I bring an attitude of strength, beauty and relaxed presentation. I am astute at recognising students’ problem areas and provide positive and specific directions to follow. My classes resonate with a tone of fun, encouragement and joy in dancing. My main focus is on Egyptian belly dance styles such as modern, cabaret, and various folk styles, but of course taking an interest in other middle eastern dance styles.

My emphasis as a teacher is on excellent technique. My technique workshops are based on specific movement families, developing the movement through the basics and into interesting combinations and layers, and finishing with a short choreography. Other workshops I love to teach are musical interpretation, developing creativity, building a choreography, and developing troupe performances.

Areas of Interest

A move to Armidale, NSW in 2003 brought home to me how difficult and expensive it is to keep in touch with the dancing scene when based 7 hours drive from a major city. My workshop content and pricing is designed to be applicable and affordable to students and schools based in the country who do not have huge numbers of students.

If you are looking for a regular class in an area closer to home, check out the directory at www.annabella.net/bellydance or www.ameraspalace.com.au/teachers
