Musical Interpretation

There is nothing more impressive than a dancer who dances within the music, and nothing more irritating than a dancer who seems to ignore it. This workshop starts by focusing on listening skills, documenting music, and making a plan. We then move onto figuring out how movements can ‘match up’ with the music. We also learn to listen for musical cues which indicate a change is coming so you can improvise expertly.

Developing Creativity

If you’re a logical thinker, it’s hard to let go and ‘feel’ the music. In this workshop we use creativity exercises to learn to build images and let go, then come back to using our logical thoughts to tie up those loose ends in our choreography, and maybe add a few focal features. Plus, for those who find tapping into their creative side almost impossible – you’d be surprised how far your logic will take you in building a creative dance.

Building a Choreography

So, you’ve done some musical interpretation, developed your creativity, but just can’t seem to put it all together in a sizzling choreography? Although the first two steps are essential in building a choreography, each choreography needs highlights, lowlights and structure to make it great. There are techniques to help pull it all together, and you can learn them.

Developing Troupe Performances

You may have a great solo choreography, but how do you put it all together for a troupe? There are different skills to be learnt when dancing in a group – non-verbal communication, dealing with different skill levels of troupe members, spacing, adjusting the dance for different size stages, and making visually pleasing arrangements of the group. We’ll address all these and more!
